Tips to Prepare the Home for Hurricane Season

Updated: Jun 29, 2022

With hurricane season spinning into action soon, it’s a great time to get your home prepared. It is better to have preparations in place than to be caught off guard by the potential costly threats that can come with a storm. Below are a few tips on preparing for a potential hurricane.

Protect Your Doors and Windows

It may seem like a no-brainer to protect your doors and windows from an upcoming storm but doing it correctly is not always so simple. One thing to think about is the regular maintenance of your home. Make sure your windows are properly sealed to prevent any leaks. Another thing to consider is whether your windows and doors are reinforced. If not, you will need impact-resistant glass or shutters. Much of the damage that occurs during hurricanes happens after damage has been inflicted on the windows and the doors. Reinforced glass can protect from high winds and debris that might get hurled at your home. Professionals can aid you in ensuring that your home is properly secured and ready for hurricane impact.

Move Debris From Your Landscape and Secure Outside Objects

Preparing your yard for a storm starts long before a storm hits. It is important to have regular maintenance to ensure that any trees on the property are regularly pruned and dead branches are removed before a storm comes in. Any loose items in the yard, such as patio furniture, cans, and so on, should be moved indoors. Loose items can become projectiles in high storm winds.

Keep Your Gutters Clean

Keeping gutters and downspouts clean is part of regular home maintenance but they are super important when it comes to hurricanes. If your gutters and downspouts are clogged during a storm the water will spill into the roof and attic which can cause major damage. Make sure that you are inspecting your gutters to be sure that the water can flow properly away from your home.

Have a Plan and Keep Basic Supplies on Hand.

There is always a possibility that something can go wrong so being prepared and having a plan is important. Part of being prepared is making sure you have supplies on hand. Items such as candles, potable water, non-perishable foods, and batteries should be stored in the home with enough supply for at least 3 days. Don’t forget to put together an emergency kit as well. This may include medical items, toiletries, clothes, and so on.

You may also have to evacuate. Make sure the members of your household are familiar with the evacuation plan and that they are ready for an emergency. Plan what items you will take with you and make sure that they can be accessed quickly when you need to leave.
